We are a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that focuses on improving and enriching the lives of children in either individual foster homes or group homes, with particular emphasis on youth aging out of the foster care system.
Some of the things we provide are as follows:
The US Foster Care System currently houses over 422,000 children.
Over 23,000 children will age out of the US Foster Care System each year.
Giving Kids Hope Foundation's mission is to empower lives and give hope to those impacted by foster care. We are firmly committed to supporting foster kids in their efforts to grow, improve, and move forward into a brighter future.
Being placed in foster care can be traumatizing and stressful. At Giving Kids Hope, we believe we can provide a network for all foster care kids, foster care families, and group homes to reach out for assistance and support, removing some of that stress. We believe this kind of support will enable the kids to one day confidently enter the world and become productive and independent.
Immediately after birth, Gordon Hill was placed into foster care due to his mother being seriously injured in a car accident. Since doctors gave her very little chance of surviving, she reluctantly signed over custody of Gordon and his older brother with the stipulation that they be adopted together. Gordon and his brother lived in foster care for three years before their mother's wish was carried out.
Gordon considers his adoption story to be one of success. He grew up with a loving family that taught him morals, ethics, and Christian values. As an adult, Gordon married the love of his life, Michelle Humphrey. Together, they raised three children and started a family business. However, with all the positivity in Gordon's life, he never forgot his past. In 2005, with the support of his family, including his adopted mother, Gordon started searching for his birth mom. In 2005, his search ended when Michelle found information connecting him to his mother.
Gordon then learned that he had been given the name William Gordon Stokes at birth, and Gordon was his birth mother's maiden name. With his birth mother's help, Gordon was able to meet with his birth father; a couple of months later, his father sadly passed away from a heart attack. Since then, Gordon has built relationships with a half-sister and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Gordon and Michelle wanted to honor those who helped him become the successful, productive person he has become and give back to those on the same journey Gordon once traveled in foster care. So, together, they founded the Giving Kids Hope Foundation, Inc. They hope to brighten the future of foster kids in group homes and those living with foster families all across North Carolina.
Michelle Humphrey Hill was born and raised in a small town in South Georgia, where she and her best friend, Marie, spent time together. Marie had spent much of her life in foster care and moving from home to home. Michelle began to understand that Marie's life differed significantly from most kids their age. Four years later, Marie was transferred to a group home a few hours away, and they eventually lost contact.
Michelle met and married Gordon Hill, who had lived the early part of his life in foster care and was adopted at the age of three. Together, they raised their three children and built a family business. With the invention of Facebook, Michelle and Marie could reconnect in 2008. Marie explained her life and the struggle of aging out of foster care in the late 80's. At that time in Georgia, foster care kids aged out at 18 with no programs in place to assist in transitioning out of the system. Michelle could see the traumatizing effects it had throughout Marie's entire life. Michelle and Marie kept in contact for the next few years until Marie unexpectedly passed away from a brain hemorrhage at the age of 41. It is highly speculated that the bleeding was caused by years and years of trauma and stress.
With these events, Michelle decided to do something to lessen the impact on kids in our current foster care system. Along with her husband, Gordon, they formed the Giving Kids Hope Foundation in 2017. Michelle works daily with foster kids in group homes, local county D.S.S., and foster families.
